Could be B12 vitamin deficiency a risk factor in carpal tunnel syndrome?

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: To determine whether serum vitamin B12 levels have an effect on CTS carpal tunnel syndrome and grade of electrophysiological factors in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome.METHODS: A total of 158 patients were included in the study. 77 CTS and 81 non detected CTS patients’ vitamin B12 levels were retrospectively determined. Data were analyzed with Shapiro Wilk, Kruskal Wallis and Chi-Square statistic tests.RESULTS: When the vitamin B12 levels of the patients were examined, deficiency was detected in 22.8% n=36 patients and normal in 77.2% n=122 patients. Vitamin B12 deficiency was found in 12.7% n=20 of the patients with CTS while 36.1% n=77 were not detected. There was no significant difference between the patients with CTS and those who were not detected as compared to B12 vitamin deficiency p = 0.351 .DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Although it was not statistically significant, vitamin B12 deficiency was significantly more pronounced in patients with severe CTS. This supports the use of vitamin B12 in treatment CTS. Our study should be supported by studies with a larger number of cases.

Karpal tünel sendromunda B12 vitamin eksikliği risk faktörü olabilir mi?

Abstract

GİRİŞ ve AMAÇ: Karpal tünel sendromu şikayetleri olan hastalarda serum B12 vitamin düzeyinin elektrofizyolojik olarak KTS karpal tünel sendromu ve derecesi üzerine etkisi olup olmadığını saptamaktır.YÖNTEM ve GEREÇLER: Çalışmaya toplam 158 hasta dahil edildi. 77 KTS ve 81 tane elekfizyolojik olarak KTS saptanmayana hastanın B12 vitamin seviyeleri retrospektif olarak incelendi. Verilerin istatistiksel analizinde Shapiro Wilk, Kruskal Wallis ve Ki-Kare testleri kullanıldı. BULGULAR: Hastaların B12 vitamini düzeylerine bakıldığında %22,8’inde n=36 eksiklik tespit edilirken, %77,2’sinde n=122 normal olarak saptandı. KTS saptanan hastaların %12,7’sinde n=20 B12 vitamin eksikliği saptanırken, %36,1’inde n=77 saptanmadı. Elektrofizyolojik olarak KTS saptananlar ile saptanmayanlar arasında B12 vitamin eksikliği karşılaştırıldığında anlamlı fark saptanmamıştır p=0,351 . TARTIŞMA ve SONUÇ: İstatiksel olarak anlamlı olmasa da KTS saptanan hastalardaki B12 vitamin eksikliği özellikle ağır KTS olan hastalarda daha belirgindi. Bu da tedavide B12 vitamini kullanımını destelemektedir. Çalışmamızın daha geniş olgu sayısına sahip çalışmalarla desteklenmesi gereklidir.
