Abstract

Invisible Threat in The Health Care; Plastic  Products  and  Theır  Effects Plastic products, which are frequently used in the health care, increase the amount of medical waste, threaten the environment and human health in terms of chemical, toxic, teratogenic, mutagenic, cancerogenic risks along with the risk of infection. Latex, Bisphenol A, Polyvinyl Chloride and similar substances are commonly used in the production of plastic products. These substances have detrimental effects on the environment and human health in the stages of production, use and disposal. The aim of this article is to seek answers for the questions such as; do we use the plastic products effectively? What are the known detrimental effects for human exposure? How to make them less detrimental? As a result, detrimental effects of the plastic products can be prevented by reduction of exposure, producing non-detrimental plastic products and dissemination of proper use. Effective use of these materials, which are used in the health care, bring nursing practice into prominence. The contributions, which nurses can make in creating safe environment and hospitals in the future, are important.

Abstract

Sağlık bakımında sık kullanılan plastik ürünler tıbbi atıkların miktarını arttırmakta, enfeksiyon riskinin
yanı sıra kimyasal, toksik, teratojenik, mutajenik, kansorojenik riskleri açısından da insan sağlığını ve çevreyi
tehdit etmektedir. Plastik ürünlerin üretiminde lateks, bisfenol A, polivinilklorür gibi maddeler yaygın olarak
kullanılmaktadır. Bu maddelerin üretilmesi, kullanımı, imha edilmesi aşamalarında çevre ve insan sağlığına
zararlı etkileri bulunmaktadır. Bu makalenin amacı; plastik ürünleri etkin kullanıyor muyuz? İnsan maruziyetine
yönelik bilinen zararlı etkileri nelerdir? Nasıl daha az zararlı hale getirilebilir gibi soruların yanıtlarını
aramaktır. Sonuç olarak plastik ürünlerin zararlı etkileri, maruziyetin azaltılması, zararlı etkileri olmayan
plastik malzemelerin üretimi ve doğru kullanımının yaygınlaştırılması ile önlenebilir. Sağlık bakımında
kullanılan bu malzemelerin etkin kullanılması hemşirelik uygulamalarına önem kazandırmaktadır. Gelecekteki
güvenli çevrenin ve hastanelerin oluşturulmasına hemşirelerin yapabileceği katkılar önemlidir.
