Evaluation of Neutrophil/Lymphocyte(NLR), Platelet/ Lymphocyte ratios(PLR) and Mean Platelet Volume(MPV) in Bell’s Palsy of children

Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate how Neutrophil/Lymphocyte (NLR), Platelet/Lymphocyte
ratios (PLR) and Mean Platelet Volume(MPV) which are indicators of inflammation show change, and likely
effects of inflammation in etiology of Bell’s Palsy which is not put forth totally yet.
Materials and Methods: This retrospective case controlled study included 27 pediatric patient diagnosed
as Bell’s Palsy, treated and followed between january 2010 and may 2018 and 25 healthy children in
our hospital. House–Brackmann classification was used in Bell’s Palsy graduation before and after their
treatment. In this study, mean values of Neutrophil counts, Lymphocyte counts, Platelet counts, Neutrophil/
Lymphocyte , Platelet/Lymphocyte ratios and Mean Platelet Volumes were compared in complete blood
count samples drawn for rutine assays of patient and controls.
Results: While the mean age in patient group was 9,76±3,71, in control group it was 9,48±3,54. Patient
group consisted of 12 male and 15 female patiens and controls included 11 male and 14 female. Before
the treatment NLR was 2,71±1,53 in patients and ,1,51±1,27 in control group. In patient group the NLR
was statistically significantly higher than that of control (p<0,05). In terms of PLR and MPV, there was no
statistical significance between both groups (p>0,05).
Conclusion: In Bell’s Palsy of children, the PLR and MPV were identified for the first time by our study
and statistically significantly increased levels of NLR in patients comparing controls supports inflammatory
theory as well.

ÇOCUKLARDAKİ BELL’S PALSY DE NÖTROFİL/ LENFOSİT ORANI, PLATELET/LENFOSİT ORANI VE ORTALAMA TROMBOSİT HACMİNİN DEĞERLENDİRİLMESİ

Abstract

Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı etyololojisi halen tam olarak bilinmeyen Bell’s Palsy de inflamasyon belirteci
olan Nötrofil/Lenfosit oranı (NLO), Platelet/Lenfosit oranı (PLO) ve Ortalama Platelet Hacminin (OTH) nasıl
değişim gösterdiğini araştırmak ve çocuklardaki Bell’s Palsy de inflamasyonun olası etkisini araştırmaktır.
Gereç ve Yöntem: Bu retrospektif çalışmaya hastanemizde Ocak 2010 ile Mayıs 2018 tarihleri arasında Bell’s
Palsy tanısı alarak tedavisi ve takibi yapılmış 27 çocuk hasta ile 25 sağlıklı birey dahil edilmiştir. Hastaların
tedaviden önceki ve sonraki Bell’s Palsy lerinin klinik derecelendirilmesinde House–Brackmann sınıflaması
kullanılmıştır. Bu çalışmada hastaların tedaviden önce rutin olarak yapılmış hemogram tetkiklerinden NLO,
PLO ve OTH değerlerinin ortalamaları ve kontrol grubunun bu ortalama değerleri karşılaştırılmıştır.
Bulgular: Bell’s Palsy grubundaki çocukların ortalama yaşları 9,76±3,71 iken kontrol grubunda ortalama yaş
9,48±3,54 idi. Bell’s Palsy grubundaki hastaların 15 i kadın 12 si erkek iken kontrol grubundaki hastaların 14
ü kadın 11 i erkekti. Tedaviden önceki NLO değeri Bell’s Palsy grubunda 2,71±1,53 iken kontrol grubunda
1,51±1,27 bulundu. Bell’s Palsy grubunda NLO değeri kontrol grubuna göre istatiksel olarak anlamlı düzeyde
yüksekti (p<0,05). PLO değeri açısından iki grup arasında istatistiksel fark izlenmedi (p>0,05). OTH değerleri
açısından da iki grup arasında istatistiksel fark izlenmedi (p>0,05).
Sonuç: Çalışmamız daki Bell’s Palsyli çocuklarda NLO nun kontrol grubuna göre anlamlı düzeyde artışı çocuklardaki Bell’s Palsy de inflamatuar teoriyi desteklemektedir. Çocuklarda Bell’s Palsy de ise PLO ve OTH ilk
kez tanımlanmıştır.
