Abstract

Determination of oral-dental health status in children with heart disease and level of awareness of infective endocarditis in their parents

Year 2020, Volume: 13 Issue: 1, 117 - 125, 30.04.2020

Abstract

Aim: In this study, it was aimed to compare oral and dental health conditions of children with congenital heart disease with healthy controls and to evaluate the awareness of infective endocarditis. Method: This cohort, designed as a prospective, controlled, multicentre study, included 71 children (min-max:5-18 years) with a heart disease and 70 children in control groups. Parents filled in a questionnaire form and the survey responses were composed of 4 different options: knows, does not know, imperfect knowledge, wrong information. Intraoral examination was evaluated with Plaque Index (PI), Gingival Index (GI), and DMFT-dmft values. Results: In the patient group, only 24 (33.8%) of the parents said that they knew endocarditis, only 6 (8.5%) knew correctly and 36 (50.7%) knew the oral-hygiene and endocarditis relationship. No statistically significant differences were found between the patient and control groups in terms of plaque index (p:0.416), gingival index (p:0.098) and DMFT-dmft index (p:0.262). Conclusion: In this study, it is found out that the parents of the children with heart disease’s awarness about the association with good oral hygene and knowledge of IE’s protection is poor. Besides, no statistically significant difference was detected about PI, GI, DMFT index values between the groups.
