PREVALANCE OF AUTOIMMUNE THYROID DISEASE IN CELIAC DISEASE

Year 2010, Volume: 4 Issue: 3, 109 - 113, 22.11.2010

Abstract

Celiac is an immunological disease induced by gliadine in susceptible individuals. It is well known that autoimmune thyroid diseases are common in patients with celiac disease. The aim of this study is to determine the frequency of autoimmune thyroid disease among patients with celiac disease in our region by evaluating thyroid function tests and autoimmune thyroid markers.
Forty patients, diagnosed with celiac disease by endoscopic duodenal biopsy in our Gastroenterology Clinics Endoscopy Unit between January 2007- September 2008, were included in the study.

Of all patients, 29 were female and 11 were male. Their mean age was 38,9 years (18-77). In the present study, frequency of autoimmune thyroid disease accompanied to celiac disease were 27.5% (n=11) of the patients. The patients who had autoimmune thyroid disease were women. Also thyroid function disorder was detected in three patients with autoimmune thyroid disease.
As a result, it is important to examine celiac patients in terms of thyroid disease owing to the fact that autoimmune thyroid disease incidence is high and thyroid function disorder may develop among these patients.

ÇÖLYAK HASTALIĞINDA OTOİMMÜN TİROİD HASTALIĞI SIKLIĞI

Year 2010, Volume: 4 Issue: 3, 109 - 113, 22.11.2010

Abstract

Çalışmaya alınan hastaların 29’u kadın, 11'i erkek ve yaş ortalaması 38,9 (18-77) idi.
