Evaluation of workplace accident-related admissions: A study of 1-year experience

Öz

Objective: To contribute to the national data on the subject by analyzing WA-related ED admissions during a 1-year period in our center.

Method: Cases admitted to our hospital due to a WA during a 1-year period were enrolled in the study. Information regarding gender, age, accident date, injury mechanism, injured body parts, consultations, diagnoses, severity of the injury, outcome of the patient and the services which the admitted patients were admitted to were gathered. p ≤.05 was considered to be significant.

Results: Three hundred and eighty patients were enrolled in the study. A great majority of the victims (88.4%) were male. Mean age of the cases was 34.88±9.74 years. The month with the highest number of admissions was June (11.1%). WA victims mostly presented during day-time period (54.7%). Contact with sharp objects was the most common injury mechanism (34.2%). More than one third of the cases were consulted with at least one department (34.2%). Upper extremities were the most commonly injured body parts (51.3%). The most common diagnosis was mild soft tissue injury (40.0%). Most of the cases (86.6%) were discharged from the emergency department; 12.6% were admitted to our hospital; .8% were referred to another health care facility, and none of the patients died in the emergency department.

Conclusions: WAs mostly affect young male workers; most of the WAs occur during day-time period; WAs mostly occur as a result of contact with sharp objects; mostly upper extremities are affected in which hands are the most commonly injured part, and hand fingers form the part which has the highest possibility of injury.
